Outsourcing, especially to foreign countries, gets a lot of bad press in the media and generates a lot of commentary about sending jobs offshore. This article is not about that. This article is about the benefits of outsourcing whether it is to other laboratories in the U.S. or elsewhere. Outsourcing is not a panacea and has its own problems which are more administrative than technical, so don't think otherwise. For example, if you are sending work to a foreign country, they have different holidays, work schedules, etc. Not realizing this can be a big surprise when you realize the case you sent is not coming back on the date you expected. Unclear work orders are not as easily addressed from different time zones as they are in your laboratory.
