During normal immunoglobulin synthesis by B-cells and plasma cells, there is excess production of poly-clonal free light chains (FLC) that are usually rapidly cleared by the kidney. The clearance of k and lambda. proteins is affected by their state of association: kappa are usually monomeric and filter approximately three times faster than lambda dimers.
