To the Editor: We read with great interest the recent article by Tan et al. on the clinical implications of elevated serum interleukin-6, soluble CD40 ligand, metalloproteinase-9, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. Their article is very interesting and comprehensive. However, we would like to point out an important aspect about the influence of preanalytical variability such as diurnal variation, which can play a role in determining the accuracy and clinical usefulness of a biomarker.
