A potential influence of gas chromatographic parameters on measured ~(13)C/~(12)C-isotope ratios of saturated fatty acid methyl esters in gas chromatography-combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS) has been studied. A dependence of measured isotope ratios on temperature gradients was observed and differences in measured δ ~(13)C-values for individual fatty acid methyl esters varied by 0.5 to 3%c. Possible reasons for this isotopic fractionation and its implications for ~(13)C natural abundance work are discussed.
