Edna was hospitalized the day before her birthday. No fun! She's 73 today and was admitted yesterday for a manic episode. She had repeatedly tried to call the White House from the local senior center and became assaultive with staff there. We learned Edna stopped taking her medication for bipolar disorder. Now she's on her way to the wound clinic for debridement of a persistent pressure ulcer. Edna knows that this can be a painful process-she's had it done often before. Her student nurse and I (the clinical instructor) are going with her, partly as a learning experience for the student and partly because the wound clinic nurse is worried about Edna's tendency to slap and scratch.
