Microwave susceptor packaging is designed to brown and crisp food in a microwave oven. During microwave cooking, the package can reach temperatures above 260°C. Because of these high temperatures and the multilayer construction of the packages, manytypes of chemicals can potentially migrate into the food. Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy in series with flame-ionization detection provides a unique solution to the simultaneous determinationof both aromatic and aliphatic nonvolatile compounds. We demonstrate the utility of SFC for determining these potential migrants in solvent extracts of several microwave susceptor packaging materials. The extract of one package studied contained 2-(2-butoxyethoxy)ethanol and several aliphatic chemicals whose FTIR and mass spectra are characteristic of aliphatic ketones.
