Sadly, families of children with disabilities additionally experience an increase in the occurrence of secondary conditions including medical, social, emotional, and community disparities (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [HHS], 2000). These conditions result in increased vulnerability and decreased overall health and well-being compared with the general population (Table l).The quality of life experienced by these families often is adversely influenced due to lack of access to many community activities and services (HHS, 2000).
