Florida is one of the nation's leading producers of fruits, vegetables and other crops—well over 200 types—but some growers have added olives and pomegranates to the menu. That's partly because citrus growers are looking for alternative crops, but also because olives, olive oil, pomegranates and pomegranate juice have powerful health benefits and the potential for healthy grower profits. Experimental plantings of olives and pomegranates on several acres of sandy, sun-drenched fields of former citrus land in Orange County southwest of Orlando are attracting significant interest from researchers and farmers.
