A learning organization is one that is successful at acquiring, cultivating, and applying knowledge that can be used to help it continually adapt to change. Whether they want to or not, all organizations change; some do it more effectively than others do. Examples of industries that continually adapt to change include commercial aviation, petrochemical, and nuclear power. Ford Motor Company, Toyota, General Electric, Motorola, Wal-Mart, and Xerox are often cited as organizational leaders for innovation and improvement. Can hospitals become learning organizations and improve healthcare quality and patient safety?
