Intraocular pressure rise after phacoemulsification surgery in glaucoma patients.

Yasutani et al. have come to the conclusion that a substantial increase in and worsening of intraocular pressure (IOP) from the preoperative level occurred in eyes with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) after phacoemulsification. These observations, however, contradict our understanding of other studies in which lower IOP after cataract surgery was more commonly seen as a result of postulations such as hyposecretion of aqueous humor, blood-aqueous barrier alteration, improvement of outflow facility, and surgical deepening of the chamber angle after cataract surgery.
