Ocular comorbidity and self-assessed visual function after cataract surgery

Cataract surgery is performed to improve visual function and patients' quality of life. However, visual acuity measurement is insufficient to evaluate surgical outcomes and a need exists for other tools to evaluate patients' self-assessed visual function and the impact of cataract surgery. The evolution of patient-reported outcome measurement has been significant in research, in particular in ophthalmic research.In 1995, the Swedish National Cataract Register (NCR) began collecting data on patient self-assessed visual function using the Catquest questionnaire.2 The Catquest questionnaire measures patients perceived visual function before and after cataract surgery. Since its inception, the Catquest questionnaire has been revised using Rasch analysis, resulting in a reduction of the number of items to 9 in the current version (Catquest-9SF). The Rasch model, which often is used to assess psychometric data, such as an individual's abilities, attitudes, and personality traits, is based on probabilistic relationships between persons (eg, patients) and items (eg, questions).
