Bonding a lingual retainer at the end of treatment is one of the most labor-intensive orthodontic procedures. Considerable time and skill are required to ensure that the wire is correctly positioned and held securely in place during the bonding process. A number of methods have been recommended for temporary fixation of the retainer wire, including dental floss, orthodontic elastics, silicone wax, magnets, stainless steel springs, and indirect bonding. Although such methods have been shown to be effective, they may still allow movement of the wire before the adhesive is cured. This article describes a simple and effective way to support a lingual retainer wire with flow-able resin during direct bonding.
