Turkish validity and reliability of the summary of diabetes self-care activities measure for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease where individuals needs to learn and maintain self-management behaviours for life. Diabetes self-management includes adherence to diet, physical activity, self-monitoring of blood sugar, diabetes medications and behavioural strategies to promote lifestyle changes (American Diabetes Association 2004). Diabetes self-management education is important in promoting health practices and reducing risks of complications (Norris et al. 2001). Diabetes self-management behaviours should be monitored regularly and supported. To assess self-management of patients with diabetes, using of a reliable and valid tool is recommended (Toobert et al. 2000). Although there are many English questionnaires and specific scales, adequate instruments in Turkish are limited. In the literature, SDSCA measure has been widely used self-report instrument for measuring diabetes self-management in adults.
