Editorial: will there ever be a Nobel Prize in nursing?

It is unlikely chat there will ever be a Nobel Prize in nursing'.. As soon as I wrote those words I suspected I would be in trouble and, as soon as I delivered them in a keynote address to an audience of 200 international nursing academics from 20 countries, I knew I was in trouble.. The sharp intakes of breath around the auditorium nearly pulled me from the podium and the worst aspect of this keynote was to come - the organisers has decided that there should be questions from the floor and answers from the speaker, not to mention the impending coffee break! The first question from the floor confirmed my suspicions and, immediately, I was embroiled in a hot debate about whether a nurse could or should ever receive a Nobel Prize and being accused of putting a ceiling: on what nurses and nursing research could achieve.
