Objective: To determine the incidence and characteristics of running-related lower-extremity injuries, and to identify predictors of injuries in high school cross-country runners.Design: Cohort study.Setting: High schools in Seattle, Washington, during the 1996 cross-country running season.Participants: Boys and girls in 12 male and 11 female cross-country teams in 12 high schools were eligible. Of 491 runners who competed during the season, 421 (86%; 235 boys and 186 girls) agreed to participate.
