The Microscopic Statement of the Second Law of Thermodynamics

One source of problems in teaching and learning chemistry has been identified as the threefold representation of matter-macroscopic,microscopic,and symbolic (1).Chemical educatio at the university level encompasses all three representations.The students thus have to be comfortable with analyzing a particular phenomenon in any representation and be able to make conceptual shifts from one representation to another.
