Robert Oppenheimer casts a long and mysterious shadow over the 20th century.Brilliant,charismatic,and moody,he was one of the most important figures in the development of theoretical physics in the U.S.,attracting the best students to his research group in Berkeley.Quite improbably he became the director of the Los Alamos laboratory during the Manhattan project and supervised the construction of the first fission bombs,bringing together scientists and engineers to accomplish an amazing technological feat.After World War II,he was one of the most influential advisors to the government on weapons policy,but his unorthodox intellect,left-wing political views,and opposition to the development of the hydrogen bomb led to the famous hearings in which his security clearance was removed.
