Fluorescence Lifetime and Quenching of Iodine Vapor

A classic undergraduate physical chemistry experiment involves the use of the absorption and emission spectra of iodine vapor to deduce vibrational properties of ground and excited electronic states (1). An attractive complement to this experiment is a study of the fluorescent lifetime of excited I_2 and its variation with pressure when different quenching gases are added (2-9).
