Toxic agents in a toxic research environment? The case of contrast ultrasound.

We have read with great interest and concern the report from the Thoraxcenter [1] in which the group of Folkert ten Cate, one of the founders of contrast ultrasound, described a.surprisingly high occurrence of anaphylactic shock (1%) after intravenous administration of an ultrasound contrast agent (Sonovue, Bracco, Milan Italy) approved for left ventricular cavity opacification. These data are shocking and actually disrupt our strong scientific belief that contrast ultrasound is an extremely safe imaging modality.
