Atrial Fibrillation: Much Heat, A Little Light

Atrial fibrillation remains the most difficult of arrhythmias to treat with catheter ablation. In contrast to catheter ablation for other supraventricular arrhythmias, catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation has a modest success rate and carries a significantly higher risk of proarrhythmia and serious complications. This reflects our limited understanding of the factors that initiate and perpetuate this complex arrhythmia and the technical challenges of creating contiguous linear lesions within the atria.
