The education of anesthesia residents and cardiothoracic fellows: Can they work together?

The accreditation of the cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowship has encouraged an exponential increase in the number of applicants seeking cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowships. This has created discontent among residents, who perceive and rightly so that fellows are competing for the major, complicated cases and depriving residents of opportunities to enhance their skills. This problem may be caused in part by instances in which fellows supervise instead of handling their own cases. These are tricky waters to navigate, for it is still crucial for our fellows to supervise and teach residents because a key goal of the fellowship is to train future educators.
