Cross-contamination describes the physical movement or transfer of bloodborne contaminants and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) from the primary incident site to other unaffected areas. The primary cause of cross-contamination is transfer by mechanical action, such as when contamination has been stepped in or touched by first responders, family, friends, pets or — in criminal cases — the suspect. Not all transfers will be visible to the human eye.
