In comparison to lots of global shippers, the chemical and petroleum industries are in an enviable position. The sector is coming off a banner year. The American Chemistry Council predicted "...that 2004 will represent some of the best results in recent memory for the U.S. business of chemistry." One big factor in this performance is that, unlike so many others, chemical companies haven't suffered from bottlenecks in the flow of their global supply chains. Their success in keeping international channels open is instructive, particularly for West Coast shippers who haven't been so fortunate.
