The First Strike

In mid-November 2013 Typhoon Haiyan (known in the Philippines as Typhoon Yolanda) was pronounced the strongest recorded tropical cyclone to make landfall, with wind speeds up to 200 mph. According to UN officials, about 12 million people have been affected and many have been left homeless. However, the first strike did not come from the winds, rain or waves; it came from the global disaster response teams who were in play before landfall.
