The 1980s were exciting growth years for the fire restoration industry. During these years, the National Institute of Fire Restoration (NIFR) hosted two technical workshops a year, led by Martin King, CR, ASA. At the annual management seminar, members would inevitably bring up the issue of getting paid. The concept for this article is based on those management seminars. For this discussion, a client will be defined as a property owner whose insurance company will pay the bill mostly for residential claims. The reasons also apply to resistance to paying deductibles or to paying for additional work not covered under the policy.
