It is set to be an interesting year for brand owners with the extension of the remit of the CAP Code from 1 March 2011. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) regulates advertising by way of the CAP Code (which governs print advertising) and the BCAP Code (which regulates television and radio advertisements). The ASA has now extended the scope of the CAP Code so that it will also cover marketing communications on corporate websites and in other non-paid-for online space under a company's control such as on social net?working sites. This will impact significantly on brand owners who use social media such as Facebook and Twitter, and businesses will also need to review their cor?porate websites to ensure that they are in compliance.
