Many of the companies in the cleaning and restoration industry are in their second and even third generations—family enterprises that have been cultivated and grown by first-generation entrepreneurs who learned from their mistakes and solved their clients' problems to the best of their ability. They operated on instinct and used the tools they had on hand to get the job done. These are the men and women who worked 24/7, often to the detriment of their own families in their quest to provide excellent emergency service over weekends, holidays and in the middle of the night. Marketing was done primarily through relationships with insurance adjusters and others in the community. Reputations were grown by word of mouth and ads in local papers or phone directories.
