I received a troubled email recently from the chief financial officer of a client company. She was alarmed at the fiscal decisions the owner was making. She was particularly unsettled by one of the owner's instructions: He wanted her to bury some of his purchases on the income statement where they might not be noticed. Apparently he was concerned—and rightly so—that those purchases would raise uncomfortable questions when his banker and I reviewed his numbers.
