Dr. Hof proposed that the body mechanics characterized by PI in the target article (Gruben and Boehm, 2012b) provide an explanation for the ground reaction force (F) intersection point observed in human walking (Gruben and Boehm, 2012a; Maus et al., 2010). As discussed in the article, PI mechanics are indeed present during walking, however the contribution of those mechanics to overall walking behavior requires more complex analysis than presented in the letter. The fundamental deficiency in the proposition that PI mechanics are a direct explanation for the F intersection point observed in human walking is that PI mechanics specifically describe behavior for a single posture. Thus, PI mechanics alone do not describe a F intersection point across postures as occurs in walking.
