When the Sarah Jordan Boarding House was first built in 1870, it was located in Menlo Park, N.J., on 34 acres comprising a research and development facility created by Thomas Edison. One of his first major inventions there was the phonograph, developed in 1877, and followed two years later by the incandescent light bulb. The Sarah Jordan Boarding house was home for several unmarried Edison employees, and was one of the first buildings to be lit by the new light bulbs.
