Measuring Ground,Surface Water Use Part of Settlement in Nebraska Dispute

Officials in Nebraska will have to know exactly how much water from the Republican River it uses if they want to avoid restrictions,according to a lawsuit settlement with Kansas over the basin.As part of the settlement,Nebraska must measure and report how much ground water and surface water it uses to Colorado and Kansas.The Nebraska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Republican River Natural Resources Districts have begun a large data-gathering project.Water supply and use will be reported to the state annually.Water professionals will report stream flow,canal and pump diversions,alluvial and upland well pumpage,climatic records,and municipal and industrial uses of water.
