The petroleum industry will have to use alternatives to methyl tertiary butyl ether(MTBE)in Arizona.The state took that action to protect underground water supplies.Arizona Department of Environmental Quality(DEQ)asked EPA to remove a requirement that gas in the state contain MTBE.The federal agency approved the request last fall,and the state Legislature passed the bill this year.
