Background: Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been conducted to investigate the difference of success rate between tooth-implant and the implant-tooth, but the results remain controversial. This meta-analysis was conducted to quantitatively summarize the evidence from RCTs to assess the difference of success rate between tooth-implant and those with implant-tooth. Methods: A comprehensive search was performed in PubMed and Web of knowledge to identify all eligible studies published in English. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated from random effects models. Publication bias was estimated using Egger's test. Results: A total of nine RCTs were included in our meta-analysis. When combined the results of nine studies, the restoration success rate for tooth-implant was 90.3% and the success rate for implant-tooth was 82.7%. When compared with the individuals who did implant-tooth, the pooled ORs with 95% confidence interval (CI) of tooth-implant was 1.84 [95% CI 1.06-3.18]. No significant publication bias was found for the analysis of success rate between tooth-implant and the implant-tooth. Conclusion: This meta-analysis suggests that tooth-implant is positively more likely to success than those of implant-tooth.
