Introduction to the Research of the Outstanding New Environmental Health Scientists

This issue is devoted to the research of the Outstanding New Environmental Scientists (ONES). From the beginning, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences saw the ONES program as being highly selective, a program devoted to the career promotion, and advancement of the future cadre of exceptionally talented and creative new scientists who could further the understanding of the impact of environmental exposures on human health.The NIH, and in particular, the NIEHS, has a long commitment and interest in the research training and funding of new investigators who bring fresh ideas and approaches to research problems. We offer fellowships, training, and career development opportunities across the career spectrum. While these provide stipends or protected time for investigators to engage in mentored research and to prepare for a research career, data showing the increasing average age of first time NIH R01 investigators pointed out the difficulty junior faculty have in securing early funding for their independent research program.
