The amino acid sequence of the nucleocapsid (NP) protein of a Malaysian heat-resistant velogenic-viscerotropic Newcastle disease virus (NDV) strain AF2240 was deduced by sequencing a cDNA clone. The protein contains 489 residues and showed considerable sequence homology with those of four other strains. Amino acid sequence comparison of 27 strains in the Paramyxoviridae family revealed significant amino acid homologies in the central segment of the proteins. Four strongly conserved segments, predominantly consisting of hydrophobic residues were located in the middle of the primary structure and are believed to have a common function.
