This paper investigated the two novel dry strength agents, prepared by chemical modification of hemicelluloses with etherifying agents in different media, for application in recycled fiber based packaging paper and old corrugated container (OCC) pulp. One new dry strength agent possessed cationic groups, whereas the other had anionic groups. It was found that these new dry agents with different DS (degree of substitution) values could clearly improve paper strength of OCC pulp. With the addition of 1.0percent (w/w) cationic type hemicellulosic derivatives with a DS value of 0.5 to OCC pulp, the physical property improvement reached its maximum: the breaking length, burst index, tear index and ring crush index increased by 27.3percent, 51.6percent, 18.5percent and 68.4percent, respectively. Hemicelluloses could, therefore, be used as source material for the production of wet-end additives in the paper industry.
