A 300,000 to 1,000,000 Btu/hr flame as we find in a modern day pressure washer burner is equal to 117 to 393 horsepower! Scary, eh? (To convert Btu/hr to horsepower multiply by 0.0003929.) That's a lot of energy! That much energy can be very dangerous, if uncontrolled. The real wonder is that we are able to control 392 horsepower with as little as seven to 15 watts! (Fuel solenoid valves are so efficient, they are used in natural draft gas burners powered by less than a volt! This permits gas controls to be self-powered using the pilot flame as a source of energy.) Let's review a marvelously simple and efficient burner control strategy. We will start with the solenoid and later narrow our sensing devices down to the thermal switch.
