'New Technology Encourages Reuse At Virginia Coal Mine

Coal and natural gas company Consol Energy has opened a new water treatment system at the Buchanan Mine that officials say make nearly 99 percent of its water reusable. The Oakwood, Va., mine is one of the nation's largest underground coal mines, and will receive GE's advanced filtration membranes and thermal water treatment technology. The new system will reduce freshwater demand as well as the volume of mine water that must be managed. The new system will also remove salt that naturally occurs in the mine water.
