Groups Protest BLM Plan To Protect Water Supplies

Water distributors could face contaminated supplies if the Bureau of Land Management(BLM)goes through with its plan to drill for oil and gas in the Oteroa Mesa,N.M.region,according to environmental groups.John Shomaker & Associates Inc.,Albuquerque,N.M.,conducted a study in June that found the aquifer beneath Otero Mesa is vulnerable to contamination by the BLM proposal because of the proximity of existing water supply wells and the porous nature of the aquifer.In addition,BLM did not make provisions to protect water supplies.
