Adaptive Behavior Ratings Correlate With Symptomatologyand IQ Among Individuals With High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders

Caregiver report on the Adaptive BehaviorAssessment System-II (ABAS) for 40 high-functioningindividuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and 30typically developing (TD) individuals matched for age, IQ,and sex ratio revealed global adaptive behavior deficits inASD, with social skills impairments particularly promi-nent. Within the ASD group, adaptive communicationskills were positively related to IQ while global adaptivefunctioning was negatively associated with autism symp-tomatology. Autistic behavior ratings related negatively toABAS scores in the TD but not the ASD group. Thisinvestigation demonstrates: the utility of an adaptivefunctioning checklist for capturing impairments, even inhigh-functioning individuals with ASD; and that a rela-tionship between social abilities and autism exists inde-pendently of intelligence.
