In the present investigation, callus was initiated from various explants viz., embryo axes, hypocotyls and leaf disc in different pigeopea genotypes on MS and B5 media. All the genotypes and explant showed highest callus induction response in medium supplemented with 2,4-D and BAP. Genotype Konkan Tur- 1 showed maximum callus induction response in leaf disc (85.05%) on MS medium with 1.0 mgl~(-1) 2,4-D. Significant difference in three way interaction effect for callus induction response was observedin hypocotyls (80.9%) of Konkan Tur-1 on B5 medium supplemented with 0.1 mgl~(-1) 2,4-D + 0.5 mgl~(-1) BAP. Average number of days required for callus induction ranged from 10 to 12 days in all genotypes. The present study proved the totipotency of ICPL-87 and Konkan Tur-1 whereas AKT-8811 developed proembryos but failed to regenerate. The genotype AKT-8811 had hard and green callus upto seventh subculture and did not showed embryogenesis.
