A diallel set of 10 parents and their 45 fi and 45 fis hybrids were analyzed to understand the nature and magnitude of gene action and to identify the best combiners for seed yield and other quantitative traits of blackgram (Vigna mungo L. Hepper). The combining ability analysis revealed that the GCA and SCA variance were significant for all the characters in each of the three environments indicating the importance of both additive and non- additive genetic control of the characters under study. However, the GCA/SCA ratio being less than unity showed that the non- additive gene action was more important for most of the traits in all the environments except for days to 50 per cent flowering in E2 for Fi generation On the basis of per se performance and gca effects, the parents UH- 84-14 and VBN-4 emerged as good general combiner for seed yield per plant and most of quantitative characters. However, the parents, which were good general combiners for specific characters, GU-1 and RBU-38 for pod length, harvest index and seed yield per plant whereas VBN-3 and VBN-4 for pod weight, number of pods per plant and seed yield per plant.
