TiB_2/TiN/Ti (C_xN_(1-x)) nanocomposite powder was fabricated by high-energy ball milling and subsequent heat treatment. The microstructure development of powder mixtures was monitored by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that TiN and TiC formed within 10 h of milling. After 30 h of milling, the resulting powder mixtures were mainly composed of nanocrystalline Ti, TiN, TiC and TiB_2. The as-milled powder was transformed into Ti (C_xN_(1-x)), TiN and TiB_2 after subsequent heat treatment at 1300 deg C. During annealing, TiC reacted with TiN, and Ti (C_xN_(1-x)) was thus obtained.
