The application of a temperature controlled filtration technique allowed to obtain thermodynamic and kinetic data characterizing finely dispersed inclusions in liquid metals. Experimental results were obtained from the study of aluminum phosphide inclusions AlP formed in Al-Si alloy melts to promote primary silicon refinement. Al experimental solubility curve of AIP was established and analysed. Precipitation and dissolution kinetic processes of ALP inclusions were experimentally determined illustrating the phenomena liquid metal filtration can help to describe in a high temperature Reacting system. Morphological evolutions of AlP inclusions in AI-Si melts were also studied as a function of ripening times under various liquid metal processing conditions. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
