Comparative assessment on the relative incidence of four major paddy insect pests, viz. yellow stem borer (YSB) ,gall midge (GM), leaf folder (LF) and paddy bug (PB) and three categories of natural enemies: predatory spiders, mirid bugs, coccenellid beetles and odonate fly population was studied in consideration of the four pest management protocol; total bio-control (TBC), need based protection (NBP), scheduled based protection (SBP) and recommended practice (RP) in the field of Swama mashuri (MTU 7029) during four consecutive kharif (summer) crop season of 2006-2009 at Raiganj, Uttar Dinajpur West Bengal. Incidence (individuals/hill) of all the pests was noted maximum in TBC (YSB-1.54, GM-1.89, LF-2.21, PB-1.34) and minimum in SBP (YSB-0.41, GM-0.32, LF-0.95, PB-0.35). In all the cases incidence of pest population showed a positive relation with the extent of damage, maximum was noted in NBP and the minimum in RP. Numerically, abundance of natural enemies, was found maximum in TBC (spider-2.64, bug-1.77, beetle-1.34, fly-1.58) and minimum in SBP (spider-0.91, bug-0.83, beetle-0.67, fly-0.97). RP yielded maximum (4.134 t/ha) while the minimum was registered in NBP (1.67 t/ha). Further costbenefit ratio (CBR) was recorded as maximum in RP (1.92) and minimum in TBC (1.35).
