A symposium titled “High-Resolution Geophysical Imaging of Geological Structures and Processes in Environmental Studies” was held at the 33rd International Geological Congress in Oslo, August 12, 2008. The talks and posters concentrated on innovative highresolution geophysical techniques for investigating diverse environmental, geological, hydrogeological and engineering problems. These techniques included the seismic reflection and ground-penetrating radar imaging methods as well as the tomographic seismic refraction, potential-field, geoelectric, electromagnetic, self-potential and surface nuclear magnetic resonance methods and the multichannel surfacewave techniques. The symposium included eight invited and sixteen submitted contributions with a balanced mixture of papers concerned with new technique development and case histories. Of these twentyfour papers, seven case histories were accepted for publication in this Special Issue.
