Uniform and macroporous polymer particles in the size range of 5-21 mcm were prepared by a multistep seeded polymerization method using uniform polystyrene particles (1.9-7.5 mcm) as seed particles for obtaining macroporous beads. A two-step swelling procedure has been employed to synthesize the macroporous polymer particles by the polymerization of the monomer phase (divinylbenzene-ethylvinylbenzene mixture) within the swollen seed particles consisting of linear polystyrene and dibutyl phthalate. The effect of molecular weight of the seed latex and components ratios on the pore size was established using transmission electron microscopy technique.
