Flexible polyurethane foam based on toluene diisocyanate and polyester polyol has been liquefied by treatment with either dimethyl phosphonate (CH3O)(2)P(O)H or diethyl phosphonate (C2H5O)(2)P(O)H at 160 degreesC. The product degraded has been studies by H-1, C-13, and P-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The likely reaction mechanism is presented. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
