Changes in growth and biochemical profile of Spirulina fusiformis inthree different media

Growth in terms of optical density and chlorophyll-a concentration of Spirulina fusiformis was studied in 3 media: Zarouk, Kossaric and NPK. Biochemical constituents (protein, carbohydrate, lipid, chlorophyll, carotenoids and phycobillins) were also studied. The highest growth was observed in Zarouk medium. The specific growth rate of S. fusiformis grown in Zarouk, Kossaric and NPK media was 0.221, 0.210 and 0.190 respectively. The differences, however, were not statistically significant (p 0.05). Protein content of S. fusiformis was lower in NPK medium than when cultured in the other two media, whereas carbohydrates and lipids were significantly higher in NPK medium (p 0.05). Phycocyanin and carotenoids of S. fusiformis cultured in NPK medium were higher than that cultured in Kossaric medium (p 0.05) but were lower than in Zarouk medium (p 0.05). It may be concluded from these findings that different culture media generate both distinct and variable biochemical profile and pigment content in S. fusiformis.
