The feasibility of semi-intensive culture of Penaeus monodon in a low salinity environment was investigated by comparing growth and production in low (0.16-6.52 p.p.t.) and high salinity (4.60-19.42 p.p.t.) areas (Haroa and Sagar Island (West Bengal, India) respectively) at 2 stocking densities (10.5 and 16.0 m2). After 135 days of culture, yields of shrimp in low- and high-stocking-density ponds were 1563.37 and 2274.00 kg/ha respectively in the low salinity area, and 1173.00 and 1974.00 kg/ha respectively in the high salinity area. Feed conversion ratios (1.31-1.58) and specific growth rates (21.04-21.19%) in ponds with low salinity were higher than those recorded in ponds with high salinity (1.35-1.68 and 19.22-19.88% respectively).
